Miss Tennessee International™ 2008

Althea Jack

As a child, Althea Jack always wanted to help her community. A scholar student, Althea graduated in the top 1% of her high school class and gained acceptance to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee on a full tuition scholarship.

At Vanderbilt, she cultivated her passion for helping others through volunteering with the Andrew Jackson Boys and Girls Club, mentoring students at Stratford High School, and leading community service initiatives to bridge the gap between Vanderbilt and the Greater Nashville communities.

After receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Human and Organizational Development with honors in May 2007, Althea secured a job position as the Executive Administrative Assistant to Speaker Pro Tem Rosalind Kurita, State senator and Chair of the Commission on Civic Education. Utilizing her professional contacts, she has been able to promote her platform of civic engagement.

Currently Althea is working with the Commission on Civic Education in its promotion of legislation encouraging parents and guardians to take their children to the voting booths. This initiative seeks to expose children to the voting process at an early age, to build curiosity about voting and spark dialogue between children and parents about the importance of voting. She is traveling the state educating and empowering children, teens and adults to exercise their civic duties. Althea encourages dialogue about how far we have come as a society and what things need to be done to ensure that we are progressing as a community and as a nation.

Althea Jack was born on July 4 in Plainfield, New Jersey to the proud parents, Ann Jordan and the late David Barker.

"Civics is not just about voting, but about familiarizing oneself about, utilizing and constructively criticizing the current processes for introducing, implementing and executing change."
